We use Xero.
Xero gets its data directly from the bank in the form of “Bank Feeds”. Xero gets the digital form of exactly what you get if you receive a paper bank statement through the mail.
Getting this data digitally to Xero is quicker for our clients because we don’t have to enter the data into a computer by hand from a bank statement. Saves hands and saves trees. The one downside is that we can only get data going forward in time. That means past data either has to be entered by hand or the data is sourced from internet banking. This is is where we need you to help because only you have access to your online banking.
That’s why we have to ask you to access your online banking and download some data and email it to us, here and there. It’s the least hassle option for you.
Or if it is just too much, come in and we’ll do it for you.
It would be nice if all banks followed the same format with their online banking.. But they don’t. So we’ve included instructions below and visual instructions for some of the main banks.
Downloading a CSV File from your bank. (ASB, ANZ, Kiwibank, Westpac)
Here are brief instructions to help you download a CSV file from the bank.
Each bank is slightly different so we’ve also added screenshots below for each for each of the different banks. They show you how it looks when you are about to download the CSV file.
It’s really important that once you save your CSV file to your computer, you do not open it as this will corrupt it and we cannot read it. Instead just send it to us via email and we can resume your job/work and stay on track and target for you.
- Get into your internet banking
- Select the account you want to download
- You’ll need to go to a “view statements” or “view transaction history” or similar tab and click on it
- Insert date range
- You’ll be asked to either “Export” (ASB, ANZ, Kiwibank) or “Download” a file.
- Make sure in all cases you select the CSV option. (“CSV file” in ANZ, “CSV- Generic” in ASB, “CSV dd/mm/yy” in Westpac, “comma separated values (CSV)) in Kiwibank.
- Click export or save and the file will be saved to wherever your computer usually saves files
- Do NOT open the file as you can corrupt it
- Now go into your email and set up an email to email@example.com and attach the file and subject it “CSV files for Slater Chartered Accountants.”
- Send it to us and we are all done.
